Airport Security

by Annette on August 9, 2010 0 Comments

Everyone who travels by air goes through airport security checkpoints. These checkpoints are operated by Transportation Security Officers from the Transportation Security Administration.

The checkpoints are there to make sure that terrorists can't bring anything aboard the plane that would enable them to take it over or destroy it. These are called "prohibited items" and cannot be brought to a checkpoint, into the secure area of an airport, or aboard an aircraft.

Not only do all passengers go through checkpoints, their checked baggage is also screened. This may happen out of passengers' view depending on the physical configuration at each airport.

It's a good idea to prepare before you arrive at the airport so that you move more quickly and efficiently through the security process. Here are some suggestions to help make the process as smooth as possible.

There's no particular style or type of clothing that ...

Cancun Sun

by Annette on July 20, 2010 0 Comments

As documented in the earliest colonial sources the island of Cancún was originally known to its Maya inhabitants as Nizuc meaning either "promontory" or "point of grass". In the years after the Conquest, much of the population died off or left as a result of disease, warfare, piracy, and famines, leaving only small settlements on Isla Mujeres and Cozumel Island.

The name Cancún, Cancum or Cankun first appears on maps from the 18th century. The meaning of Cancun is unknown, and it is also unknown whether the name is of Maya origin. If it is of Maya origin, possible translations include "Place/Seat/Throne of the Snake" or "Enchanted Snake". Snake iconography was prevalent at the pre-columbian site of Nizuc.

The Hotel Zone of Cancún is shaped like a 7 with bridges on each end connecting to the mainland. Hotels on the vertical or long side of the 7 tend ...

Acapulco- The Mexican Destination!

by Annette on July 1, 2010 0 Comments

There are two stories about how Acapulco bay was discovered by Europeans. The first states that two years after the Conquest, Hernán Cortés sent explorers west to find gold. The explorers had subdued this area after 1523, and Captain Saavedra Cerón was authorized by Cortés to found a settlement here. The other states that the bay was discovered on 13 December 1526 by a small ship named the El Tepache Santiago captained by Santiago Guevara. The first encomendero was established in 1525 at Cacahuatepec, which is part of the modern Acapulco municipality. In 1531, a number of Spaniards, most notably Juan Rodriguez de Villafuerte, left the Oaxaca coast and founded the village of Villafuerte where the city of Acapulco now stands. Villafuerte was unable to subdue the local native peoples, and this eventually resulted in the Yopa Rebellion in the region of Cuautepec. Hernán Cortés was obligated to send Vasco ...

The Eco-Evolution of Riviera Maya

by Annette on December 1, 2009 0 Comments

In Riviera Maya and Cancun there have been countless, All-Inclusive resorts built on the beach front. Most of them built as close to the beach as the government allowed and then connected to the road with private drive-ways and made into beautiful beach hotels and resorts. But the only downside to all of these beautiful, All-Inclusive resorts being constructed is that the ecosystems in the Riviera Maya have been destroyed and polluted. For instance, there is a plant called the mangrove that grows on the coastlines of most tropical locations that help protect the coasts from erosion, surge storms, and tsunamis and they do this through their root systems that work to dissipate wave energy. This plant has largely been removed from the areas that the resorts have been built to make room for pools, hotels, and driveways.

But as always there is an exception to this enviromental incident caused ...

Venice, Italy - Escape the Winter Blues!

by Annette on October 1, 2009 0 Comments

Venice, Italy; one of the most ancient, exotic, and wonderful places in the world to visit. Venice was home to many civilizations over the past few centuries and is now home to the Italians that are very proud of their beautiful country. It is said that in the American winter months Venice is filled with American "heat-seekers" that have eluded the frigid North American months. While this peak season might be a little hot and a little more expensive, it is definitely a unique winter vacation. Think about it, while you are sitting down at a nice, European cafe overlooking the Mediterranean sea, your friends and family back home are throwing on layer after layer of clothing to try to keep the chills away! What a glorious breakfast that would be!

One of the most reputable "palaces" (resorts) would be the Hotel Danieli. This palace is surprisingly affordable and it ...

Traveling to Buenos Aires

by Annette on September 23, 2009 1 Comment

Some people really know how to enjoy a vacation. This ability sometimes depends on the person and sometimes it depends on the person's wallet. Today I would like to talk to you about a vacation that a person can enjoy no matter who they are (but it might take a bit more in the wallet than the general all-inclusive Mexican vacation). Buenos Aires, Argentina is said to be the birth place of Tango and is one of the most sought-after vacation destinations in the world. There are many places to eat but "La Cabana" is said to have some of the nicest steak and wine meals to be found in existence! But between the meals, the shopping, and the irrefutable accommodations like the Alvear Palace Hotel, Buenos Aires is definitely a destination that will not disappoint even the most sophisticated tastes.
